Fatherland (2024)
Fatherland is an intimate study of grief, home, and distance. It explores the death of my grandfather, John, who passed on Christmas Eve, 2024 and my father’s grief as we visit his childhood home for the last time. It is my best attempt to capture this moment, to preserve a memory of this house, of this period of my life and my father’s life. My father, born and raised in Cork, Ireland, immigrated to the US at around 27 years old. He is the only one of his immediate family to emigrate. The work examines the human lifecycle, the return to a homeland that is no longer home, and the impact of distance, both physical and emotional, from loved ones.
